Compact by Design is an initiative we created to identify products that, although may not always appear visually different, have a more efficient design. Through the removal of excess air and water, these products require less packaging and become more efficient to ship. At scale, these small differences in product size and weight lead to significant reductions in carbon emissions.

Sustainability is the focus. Small changes in product size and weight can result in lower carbon emissions. Here are a few of the many ways products can qualify for the Compact by Design program:

Reduced packaging is one way products can become more efficient. By eliminating excess air and water, less material is needed to contain the item, lowering the overall size and weight. This streamlined design makes the product cheaper to transport, as shipping costs are reduced due to the lighter load.

Another qualifying factor is concentration. Products that are more concentrated require less liquid or aerosol, again decreasing the overall package dimensions. Compact refills that replace larger containers also fit this criteria, as the reduced size leads to a smaller carbon footprint per use.

Efficient designs that use less material are also considered. Products made with lighter components or in a way that minimizes waste can earn the Compact by Design designation. This could involve redesigning the shape, choosing alternative materials, or finding manufacturing efficiencies.

The key is that these products, whether or not they look drastically different, have been optimized to reduce their environmental impact through size and weight reduction. While the changes may seem minor on an individual level, the cumulative effect of many products becoming more compact can lead to substantial decreases in carbon emissions across supply chains and distribution networks.
